Transfer Rate Reading Tests

- CD Format

The Sony DRU-710A supports up to 48X reading speed. Below are the transfer rate graphs, along with the comparison with the other two drives, from Philips and Pioneer:

Sony, due to its 48X reading speed proved to be the fastest among the drives, confirming the manufacturer's specifications.

- DVD Format

With a PTP DVD-ROM disc, the starting point of the two layers is at the inner part of the disc. The drive reads from the beginning of each layer (inner part) progressing towards the outer part of the disc.

With an OTP Dual Layer disc, the first layer structure is the same as the first layer on a PTP disc. The drive reads the first layer exactly the same way as PTP discs, and at the same speed. The starting point of the second layer of an OTP disc is located at the outer part of the disc.

With SL media the performance was similar for all drives. However with DL that changed where the Pioneer DVR-108 had no rival.

Pioneer is also faster at reading DVD-R/+R media, while with RW media, all drives had similar performance.

We rip the contents of a DL pressed movie with all of the drives. Sony was the fastest while Philips was close behind. The Pioneer drive was slow in this test.
